Wi-Fi Problems That Are Not Your Provider's Fault

Buffering in the back bedroom is usually a coverage problem inside the house, not a speed problem at the street. Upgrading the plan will not fix it.

A common sequence: video stutters in the back bedroom, the household concludes the internet is too slow, someone calls the provider and upgrades to a faster plan, and the back bedroom is exactly the same.

That happens because the plan speed describes what arrives at the house. What happens between the router and the device in the far bedroom is a separate system, and it is the one that is usually failing. Buying more of the first thing does not improve the second.

Diagnose Which Problem You Have

Run a speed test twice. Once on a device connected by ethernet cable to the router, or standing next to it, and once in the room with the problem.

If both are slow, the issue is upstream and it is a service question. If the router is fast and the far room is slow, you have a coverage problem inside the house. Nothing your provider sells will fix it, though they will happily sell it to you.

Also check latency and packet loss rather than only download speed. Video calls, gaming, and voice assistants are far more sensitive to latency and jitter than to raw throughput. A connection with high download numbers and unstable latency feels worse than a slower, steadier one.

Router Placement

This is the highest impact free change available and most households have it wrong.

  • Central and high. Wi-Fi radiates outward and downward. A router in a corner of the basement is broadcasting most of its signal into the ground and the neighbor's yard.
  • Out in the open. Inside a media cabinet, behind a television, or in a closet costs you significant range.
  • Away from metal, mirrors, water, and masonry. A large aquarium, a mirrored wall, a refrigerator, or a plaster wall with metal lath all attenuate signal heavily.
  • Away from the microwave and from cordless phone base stations, which share spectrum with the 2.4 GHz band.
  • Antennas positioned deliberately if your router has them, generally some vertical and some horizontal on a multi story house.

Providers install the router where the cable enters the house, which is chosen for the installer's convenience and is almost never the right place for coverage. Moving it, or running an ethernet cable to a better location and putting it there, frequently solves the whole problem.

Bands and Channels

Modern routers broadcast on multiple bands with different characteristics.

2.4 GHz travels farther and penetrates walls better, and it is slower and much more congested. It is the band you want for a device at the far edge of the house or for a sensor in the garage.

5 GHz is considerably faster with shorter range. It is the right band for a laptop or television in the same room or one room away.

6 GHz, on newer equipment, is faster still with the shortest range and very little congestion, since fewer devices use it.

Most routers steer devices between bands automatically and mostly do this competently. If a specific device consistently connects poorly, it is worth checking which band it landed on.

In an apartment or dense neighborhood, channel congestion is real. Many routers select channels automatically and some choose poorly. A Wi-Fi analyzer app on a phone will show which channels the neighbors are using, and moving to a quieter one takes a minute in the router settings.

When to Add Hardware

If placement and band tuning do not solve it, the house is larger or more obstructive than one access point can cover.

A mesh system uses multiple units that hand devices off between them. It is the usual answer for a house where one router cannot reach everywhere. The critical detail is how the units talk to each other. Units connected by ethernet perform substantially better than units relying on a wireless link back to the main unit, because a wireless backhaul consumes capacity to carry the traffic twice.

Wired access points are the more durable version of the same idea. If you can run ethernet, either during another project or through an accessible basement or attic, an access point at each end of the house outperforms almost any wireless solution.

Range extenders, the single unit variety that rebroadcasts an existing network, are the least expensive option and generally the weakest. They typically halve throughput and often create a second network name that devices cling to. They can help in a specific dead spot and they are rarely the right whole house answer.

Powerline and MoCA adapters carry network traffic over existing electrical or coaxial wiring. MoCA in particular works well in houses already wired for cable television and is a good way to get a wired link to a distant room without opening walls.

Router Age and the Provider's Equipment

A router more than about five years old is likely limiting you. Wi-Fi standards have moved, and older equipment handles many simultaneous devices poorly, which matters in a house full of phones, televisions, cameras, and smart home devices.

If you are renting equipment from your provider, check the monthly fee. Rental fees frequently exceed the cost of buying a comparable device within a couple of years. Confirm compatibility first, and note that on some services the modem and router are separate decisions, so you may be able to buy one and keep the other.

Before Blaming Wi-Fi

  • Reboot the modem and router. Genuinely, and not just once a year.
  • Check how many devices are connected. Households routinely have more than they think.
  • Look at what is uploading. Cloud backups, camera uploads, and game console updates saturate the upload path, which is narrower than the download path on most cable and fixed wireless plans. Security cameras in particular are a steady upload load, which is worth accounting for alongside where security cameras and sensors actually belong.
  • Update the router firmware, which is both a performance and a security matter.
  • Test with one device at a time to isolate whether the problem is the network or one machine.
  • Use ethernet where you can. A desk, a television, and a game console are all stationary. Wired connections are faster, lower latency, and free up airtime for everything else.
