Tile sheds most water. Grout absorbs it. Neither is a waterproof barrier, and any shower built as though they were will eventually put water into the wall behind it.
What keeps a shower dry is the assembly behind the tile: the substrate, the waterproofing membrane, and the way the two are joined at every corner, seam, and penetration. It is entirely invisible when the job is done, which is exactly why it is worth asking about before the job starts.
Why Failures Take Years to Appear
A shower that was built wrong does not leak on day one. Water accumulates in the wall cavity slowly, the framing stays damp, and over a few years the damage becomes visible as loose tile, a soft spot in the floor outside the shower, a stain on the ceiling below, or a musty smell that has no obvious source.
By then the repair is a demolition, not a patch. This is why waterproofing is the part of a bathroom remodel least worth economizing on, and it is the part a homeowner is least equipped to inspect after the fact.
The Substrate
The board behind the tile is not drywall. Standard drywall in a wet area is a defect, and green board, the moisture resistant drywall sometimes used in bathrooms, is not rated as a shower substrate either. It resists humidity, not standing water.
Acceptable substrates in a shower are cement backer board, fiber cement board, glass mat gypsum panels intended for wet areas, or a foam board system. Each has a manufacturer specified installation method, including fastener spacing and seam treatment.
Ask which product is being used and confirm it is being installed to the manufacturer's instructions, because mixing components from different systems is a common way to void a warranty.
The Membrane
Waterproofing goes over or into the substrate. There are two general approaches.
Sheet membranes are bonded to the substrate and the seams are sealed with the system's own tape and corners. They are consistent in thickness because the sheet is manufactured to a thickness.
Liquid applied membranes are rolled or trowelled on, usually in multiple coats, with reinforcing fabric at corners and seams. They conform readily to complex shapes. Their weakness is that coverage depends on the installer applying enough material, and thin spots are invisible.
Both work when installed correctly. What matters more than the choice between them is that it is a complete system from one manufacturer, that corners and changes of plane are reinforced, and that every penetration is sealed.
Where Showers Actually Leak
Not through the field of the wall. Through the details.
- Inside corners and the wall to floor transition, which move slightly and need reinforcement rather than just membrane carried around them
- The curb, which is waterproofed on all three faces
- The niche, which is a hole cut in a waterproof wall and needs a sloped sill and fully sealed corners. A recessed niche is the single most common failure point in a modern shower.
- The bench, for the same reason, and it needs slope so water runs off
- Around the valve and the shower arm, where the membrane has to seal to the pipe penetration
- The drain connection, where the membrane must bond to the drain flange. A drain not designed to bond with the membrane system is a leak in waiting.
- The threshold where the shower floor meets the bathroom floor
When you ask a contractor about waterproofing, ask about these specifically. A contractor who can describe how they handle the niche corners and the drain flange connection is telling you they have thought about it.
Slope and Drainage
The shower floor has to slope to the drain, typically around a quarter inch per foot, and so does the layer beneath the tile. If only the tile is sloped and the waterproofing below it is flat, water that gets through the grout sits on the membrane indefinitely.
Preslope, then membrane, then the tile bed. Ask whether there is a preslope. On a linear drain, the slope runs in one direction rather than four, which is simpler to build and is one reason linear drains have become common.
Ventilation
Waterproofing keeps liquid water out of the wall. Ventilation keeps water vapor from accumulating in the room, and a bathroom without adequate exhaust develops mold, peeling paint, and damaged finishes regardless of how well the shower is built.
Check three things: that the fan is sized for the room, that it actually vents outdoors rather than into the attic, and that it runs long enough after a shower. A timer or humidity sensing switch handles the third. Fans terminating in the attic are common in older houses and they cause real damage, including contributing to the moisture problems discussed in window condensation and what it is telling you.
What to Put in the Quote
- The substrate product and thickness
- The waterproofing system by manufacturer and product, and whether it is sheet or liquid applied
- Confirmation that all components are from the same system
- How niche, bench, curb, corners, and penetrations are treated
- Whether a preslope is included
- The drain type and whether it is compatible with the membrane system
- Whether a flood test will be performed before tiling, and for how long
- Exhaust fan capacity and where it terminates
- Rot repair rates if damage is found during demolition
The flood test is worth insisting on. Plugging the drain, filling the pan, and leaving it for a day proves the waterproofing before tile goes over it. It costs a day and it is the only opportunity to find a problem while fixing it is still cheap. Ask for a photograph of it.
Cost Context

Waterproofing is a modest share of that total and the wrong place to find savings. If one quote is meaningfully lower than the others, ask what substrate and membrane system it includes, because that is frequently where the difference is.
Expect to find damage during demolition on an older bathroom, particularly around the toilet flange and at the tub or shower base. Hold a contingency, and read how change orders work on a home project before the work starts rather than during it.
Verify licensing and insurance using verifying a contractor's license, insurance, and references, and confirm that plumbing changes are permitted where your jurisdiction requires it.
